Music of the British Isles
We are sorry to announce that our planned guest cellist Lynn Harrell had to cancel his performance with Sinfonia da Camera for this event. We hope he will engage and inspire us with his musical expertise at a Sinfonia concert during a future Krannert Center season. The orchestra will instead perform Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations.
Join Sinfonia da Camera and our principal oboist John Dee as we explore music of the British Isles. Tonight’s concert opens with Vaughan Williams’ The Wasps, Aristophanic Suite, written while he studied orchestration in Paris with Maurice Ravel. Sinfonia and John Dee will then present Wooldridge’s Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra. Following intermission, Felix Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides Overture (Fingal’s Cave) will be presented. Mendelssohn was greatly affected by his visit to Scotland and wanted to memorialize this with a composition. His dramatic melodies leave little doubt of the majesty and danger of Fingal’s Cave. This evening’s concert will end with Edward Elgar’s Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 36 (Enigma).
