Mary Halvorson: Canis Major

Brooklyn-based guitarist, composer, and Nonesuch recording artist Mary Halvorson is widely recognized for her distinctive sound and innovative approach to jazz. Over the past two decades, she has earned numerous accolades, including a 2019 MacArthur Fellowship and nine consecutive DownBeat Critics Poll awards for Guitarist of the Year. She has appeared on more than 75 recordings as a leader, co-leader, or collaborator.

Her latest album, About Ghosts, was named Best Jazz Album of 2025 by NPR Music, Slate, and leading international critics polls, which also honored her as Composer and Guitarist of the Year.

Halvorson now turns her focus to her new quartet, Canis Major, featuring Dave Adewumi (trumpet), Henry Fraser (bass), and Tomas Fujiwara (drums). After recent New York appearances, the group embarks on its first US and European tour this spring, showcasing a dynamic, intimate sound shaped by deep interplay and intensity.
