CONTRA-TIEMPO & Las Cafeteras: joyUS justUS
joyUS justUS is an immersive dance experience that takes on joy as the ultimate expression of resistance. Whenever humans have survived immense hardship and injustice, prevailing with their humanity intact, the presence of joy—the knowing and celebration of true beauty and power—has been at the root. joyUS justUS seeks to redefine the often negative narrative surrounding people of color in the United States as being underprivileged, voiceless, powerless, and victimized.
In this production, that tale is flipped through stories of joy collected from communities of color in South Los Angeles—personal truths about the power of hope, faith, family, and community. These are expressed through the rigorous social dance forms that inform CONTRA-TIEMPO’s Urban Latin Dance technique and are set to the powerful, live, East L.A. sound of son jarocho superstars Las Cafeteras. The stage hosts a community altar and is populated with local, intergenerational participants. Don’t miss this joy-filled evening that celebrates healing, connectivity, and love!
Recommended for ages 8 and up.
