The Staatskapelle Weimar, founded in 1491, is one of the oldest orchestras in the world and one of Germany’s leading ensembles, its illustrious history peopled with some of the world’s best-known musicians and works. The Staatskapelle continues this tradition of excellence with its music director and principal conductor, Kirill Karabits, a rising global leader. Karabits was named Conductor of the Year at the 2013 Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards—the highest recognition for live classical music in the United Kingdom, honoring this musician “whose charisma, imagination, scholarly intelligence, and vivid communication have touched audiences wherever he performs.” Their celebratory all-Brahms program will showcase both the grandeur of the orchestra and Karabits’ finesse, which demonstrates “that blend of urgency and yielding tenderness that makes his performances of romantic repertoire so winning” (The Telegraph). On its first North American tour, the Staatskapelle will be joined by violinist Valeriy Sokolov. Of Sokolov’s recent performance of the Brahms Violin Concerto, Singapore’s Straits Times wrote, “The master of the subtle nuance, Sokolov drew the audience into a world of profound intimacy and deep discretion.”
