Sinfonia da Camera: From Ukraine to the Great Gate of Kyiv

Sinfonia da Camera's 40th Season Finale comes to a triumphant conclusion with the debut of a new orchestration of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition by composer-in-residence David Deboor Canfield! The concert begins with Prokofiev's "Classical" Symphony No. 1, a marvelous blend of the economy, clarity, wit, and whimsy that Prokofiev gleaned from Haydn and Mozart. Next follows recently composed music by the contemporary Ukrainian composer Victoria Vita Polevá. In her brief explosive fanfare, she gives voice to the anguish and solidarity she feels with her compatriots during this intense war period. The concert continues with Piano Concerto No. 2 of Rachmaninoff, a great representative of Russian romanticism. The concerto exemplifies the sumptuous harmonies and lyricism that are hallmarks of Rachmaninoff's music, with themes that became the melodies of several popular songs, including Sinatra's "Full Moon and Empty Arms."

At 6:30pm there will be a free pre-concert lecture at Stage 5 by composer-in-residence David Canfield with music director Ian Hobson demonstrating from the piano. This presentation will provide insight into Mussorgsky's masterwork Pictures at an Exhibition and Canfield's process of creating a new orchestration.
