The Pirates of Penzance

Music by Arthur Sullivan
Libretto by W.S. Gilbert
Ian Hobson, music director and conductor
Dawn Harris, director
Nathan Gunn, The Pirate King

The Pirates of Penzance is a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W.S. Gilbert. Sinfonia da Camera will be joined by Lyric Theatre @ Illinois faculty members Nathan Gunn as the Pirate King and Dawn Harris as director, along with other Lyric Theatre @ Illinois faculty and students, in a semi-staged production. The story concerns Frederic, who, having completed his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tenderhearted pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and the two young people fall instantly in love. Frederic soon learns, however, that he was born on the 29th of February, and so, technically, he must serve until he is 84! Wit and merriment abound as the plot unfolds.
