Niladri Kumaar presents The Space Between the Notes, honoring Zakir Hussain
On October 29, 2024, master tabla player and percussionist Zakir Hussain performed at Krannert Center, a duet evening with Rahul Sharma on santoor. It would be his final public performance; Hussain passed away in San Francisco on December 15, 2024, at the age of 73.
Sitar maestro Niladri Kumaar is hailed as a maverick musician and composer, a celebrated ambassador, and an Indian music icon who frequently collaborated with Hussain over many years. Kumaar returns to Krannert Center with his program The Space Between the Notes, honoring the iconic Hussain and their shared musical tradition. Kumaar continues to expand the reach of Indian music and brings a specially curated 2026–2027 tour, with his sitar, Zitar, and an ensemble of Indian and American musicians. The Space Between the Notes is a musical journey rooted in tradition, and sure to deeply resonate with the hearts of music fans around the world.
