Harlem 100—Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance

Mwenso and the Shakes
With special guests Brianna Thomas, Michela Marino Lerman, and Vuyo Sotashe

In the early 1900s, New York City’s Harlem neighborhood became an African-American cultural mecca—an unrivaled center for an artistic outpouring of literature, music, and more fueled, in part, by such luminaries as Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Ethel Waters, Langston Hughes, and Billie Holiday. A century later, the global artists of Harlem-based Mwenso and the Shakes have paired with the National Jazz Museum in Harlem to pay homage to the sights and sounds of Harlem in an electrifying, multimedia music and dance showcase that celebrates one of the most influential artistic movements of this country and gives insight into Harlem then and now.

This performance will last approximately one hour and 30 minutes with no intermission.
