Afroso hails from the GaDangme people of coastal Ghana. His presentation Jaku Mumor—which can be experienced at Krannert Center on Saturday, September 23—gifts audiences with a fresh perspective of the GaDangme of West Africa, a viewpoint that highlights the abundance of the continent, not what it lacks. It pays respect to the wise ways of Afroso’s elders and ancestors and their reverence for and connection to the natural world. The program centers around the elements of nature and the wisdom of the elders that is communicated through music, dance, and storytelling.
In this discussion, University of Illinois faculty and staff will supplement Okaidja’s presentation with descriptions of their own work to protect and preserve sentinel cultures advocating strategies for surviving and thriving. Join them for this session of active celebratory resistance.
