The Chicago Symphony’s trademark power and brilliance will be on full display when the distinguished Swiss conductor Philippe Jordan steps onto the podium to lead Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4. From the opening brassy fanfare to its gorgeous melodies and emotional intensity, Tchaikovsky’s breakthrough masterpiece swings from dark despair to exuberant triumph. The concert begins with Wagner’s Overture to Rienzi before showcasing Musical America’s Instrumentalist of the Year, violinist Augustin Hadelich, in the cinematic and virtuosic Violin Concerto by Korngold. “The essence of Hadelich’s playing,” wrote Robert Battey in The Washington Post, “is beauty: reveling in the myriad ways of making a phrase come alive on the violin, delivering the musical message with no technical impediments whatsoever, and thereby revealing something from a plane beyond ours.”
