Shovels & Rope
Spouses Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent carry the tightly harmonized, melodic torch of American folk music as Shovels & Rope, but their sound also “fuses the rhythmic scrappiness and renegade spirit of punk rock with the narrative content and porch-pickin’ bones of American roots—and a bit of blues thrown in for good measure” (Rolling Stone). As Hearst says, “it’s dynamic. That’s the real authenticity of folk music, is that it’s yours to do with whatever you want.” On their latest album, Little Seeds, the Americana Music Association Song of the Year-winning duo draws from tumultuous times and the birth of their daughter to expertly craft their creative terrain. In live performance, they present “a combination front-porch hootenanny, joyful church service, and honky-tonk excursion” (Chicago Tribune).
This performance will last approximately one hour and 15 minutes with no intermission.
