Krannert Uncorked and CU Folk & Roots Festival Present Eddie Barbash & KASA Quartet with Meadowhawk
Kick off the 2023 CU Folk & Roots Festival at Krannert Center with Eddie Barbash and the KASA Quartet!
Saxophonist Eddie Barbash and the KASA Quartet unite to breathe new life into the timeless tradition of jazz with strings. The joyous improvisation and swing of Eddie's jazz quartet combine with the lush sound of the KASA Quartet to bring you the best of both worlds: an octet that may make you shout with joy or bring you to tears.
From American roots music to the rhythms of Mexico, France, and Brazil, the criterion for their repertoire is simple: timeless melody. Duke Ellington, Claude Debussy, Pedro Infante, and Roy Orbison are all exemplified by this versatile, dynamic double quartet.
Opening for Eddie Barbash and the KASA Quartet is local trio Meadowhawk. Meadowhawk is Amanda Ramey on fiddle, Claire Johnson on fiddle, and Matt Turino on guitar, fiddle and feet. This band local to Urbana plays a mix of fiddle traditions through their unique lens. Amanda and Claire compliment each other’s styles and strengths with beautiful melodic and harmony interplay throughout the arrangements while Matt lays a solid foundation of rhythm and chordal coloring. They play tunes from American, Irish, Scottish, and Canadian traditions as well as some of their original tunes.
