Jupiter String Quartet with Jon Nakamatsu, piano
The esteemed string quartet-in-residence at the University of Illinois opens Krannert Center’s 2019-20 Classical Mix Series. “One of the mainstays of the American chamber music scene,” the Jupiter String Quartet has invited pianist Jon Nakamatsu—known internationally for the panache and elegance of his solo, concerto, and chamber performances—to join them for Brahms’ Piano Quintet (New Yorker). In 1997, while he was a high school teacher of German with no formal conservatory training, Nakamatsu’s electrifying performance of Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto won him the Gold Medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition amidst a field of experienced competition warriors and launched his ensuing distinguished performance career.
