Ian Hobson, music director and conductor
Jonathan Keeble, flute

Frequently touted as an “unsung composer,” Cipriani Potter is less well known than many of his contemporaries, but praised by those who know his works. On offer in this performance is Potter’s Overture to The Tempest, followed by Richard Prior’s new Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, written for our very own Jonathan Keeble. Maestro Ian Hobson leads the orchestra from the piano for Camille Saint-Saëns’ most famous piano concerto, his Piano Concerto No. 2, which was premiered by Anton Rubinstein in 1868. And finally, we finish with Schubert’s own Unfinished Business, his “Unfinished” Symphony No. 8 in B Minor. Comprising only two movements, this symphony is frequently named the first Romantic symphony because of Schubert’s ability to shape time and tonality in an unprecedented way. Listen for Schubert’s opening “ghost” of a melody—described as a “revenant of a dream.”

Potter: Overture to The Tempest
Prior: Concerto for Flute and Orchestra
Saint-Saëns: Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, Op. 22
Schubert: Symphony No. 8 in B Minor, D. 759, “Unfinished”

This performance will run approximately one hour and 58 minutes, and includes a 20-minute intermission.
