Music of Destiny
An exciting offering of acclaimed masterworks and engaging discoveries will have you on the edge of your seat. Stacy Garrop, the Music Alive Composer-in-Residence with the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra, will introduce three compelling portraits from her Mythology Symphony. Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto is perhaps the most perfect ever composed, and CUSO will be joined by Stefan Milenkovich, one of the greatest violinists of his generation. The evening concludes with Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, which is always thrilling to hear in live performance.
Music Alive is a national residency program of the League of American Orchestras and New Music USA that demonstrates the power and value of living composers working at the center of American orchestras. Stacy Garrop’s music is centered on dramatic and lyrical storytelling, and she has composed works for orchestra, wind ensemble, choir, art song, chamber ensembles, and oratorio. Garrop, who earned degrees in music composition at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (BM), University of Chicago (MA), and Indiana University at Bloomington (DM), has also devoted much of her career to music education and taught composition at Roosevelt University in Chicago from 2000 until 2016.
