Echoes of the Steppe: Improvisation in Mongolian Music and Fusion (An Improvisors Exchange Workshop)

Join Tuvergen for an immersive workshop exploring the rich traditions of Mongolian music, including throat singing, the horsehead fiddle (morin khuur), and contemporary fusion. Rooted in the sounds of nature, Mongolian music imitates the voices of the wind, water, animals, and the vast steppe, creating a deeply organic and expressive soundscape. This session will highlight the improvisational essence of Mongolian music and how it seamlessly blends with modern styles. Participants will experience live demonstrations, engage in interactive improvisation exercises, and discover the deep connection between nature, storytelling, and musical expression in Mongolian culture.

Improvisers Exchange

Founded in 2017 as an annual research initiative of the Center for Advanced Study, Improvisers Exchange has evolved into a multi-dimensional program anchoring Finkelman’s work in teaching a student ensemble, along with presenting concerts, workshops, lectures, and residencies that feature leading artists in improvised music. Improvisers Exchange is supported by Krannert Center and the School of Music.
