DJ SILKEE—Morris Day Old School Jam

Please note: As part of an ongoing project to renovate Krannert Center's parking garage elevator lobbies, the elevator lobby in Orange Parking (Illinois Street upper level) is currently closed. The elevator is not accessible from the Orange Parking garage. If you would like stair access from the Orange Parking garage, please use the door to the south (left) of the elevator lobby. If you would like elevator access from Illinois Street and are driving, please instead use the Yellow Parking (Illinois Street lower level) garage. The elevator can be accessed from Yellow Parking or from the two Oregon Street garages (Blue and Green). In addition, an accessible ramp is available from the street to the lobby-level entrance on Oregon Street. Please consider allotting some additional time to reach your destination while this work takes place. We appreciate your patience with the inconvenience you might experience as we work to serve you better!

Ja'Naea Modest A.K.A. DJ Silkee is an up and coming DJ in the Midwest area. She was born in Danville, IL but grew up in #Urbana and attended Urbana Schools.

This is a young woman that not only helps the local music scene be more exciting and vibrant, she also has an invested interest in giving back to the community through her youth outreach.

Ja'Naea is very invested in her outreach to young people. She conducts numerous She Spins DJ camps for girls ages 10-17, and she also mentors several young people in the area. When DJ Silkee is not working events or her camps, she is at the Boys and Girls Club assisting with the DJ program that is being offered through the week. She loves working with children and is a community pillar. With her programming, she has spent countless hours helping young people find their voice. She feels that investing in youth is investing in our future. She also enjoys playing basketball, reading, and traveling, too.

Her love for music has introduced her to many opportunities. She has been able to open up for local artists and well-known artists such as Ava Max, Mystikal, DJ Self, Young Dro and more. She has also DJ'd for many University of Illinois events, Champaign Unit 4, Urbana District 116, Urbana Sweet Corn festival, Urbana Get Down, and many other great events.

Silkee always had a love for music and the fascination of DJ-ing. Her mother introduced her to music at a young age and it has helped her to get to the point of where she is now. Later on, her best friend urged her to start DJ-ing for a singing group called Prince Night. From there, many doors were opened to DJ-ing in the community, from parties to residences.

People such as Arisca "Doc-A" Hampton. Ramondo "Mondo" Youngblood, Erik "Nast-E" and Andre "I.C. Dre" Gray began to mentor Silkee and show her the ropes. From each of them, she was able to learn different skills that helped her develop her own style of blending old music with new music.

You also may have noticed her in an appearance on the Steve Harvey Show. That appearance went viral.

You can find DJ Silkee at many local festivals and events during summer and fall. For booking, please contact her Facebook page, DJ Silkee, or email her at djsilkee [at] gmail.com. Interested in listening to any of Dj Silkee's mixes? Tap the link: mixcloud.com/djsilkee
