Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Riccardo Muti, Zell music director
David Afkham, conductor

The relationship between the magnificent Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Krannert Center that began in the Center’s early years has only strengthened over time. Now, as one of the world’s premier orchestras returns to one of the world’s premier performance halls, David Afkham takes the podium for a program featuring Haydn’s emotionally charged Mourning Symphony, Strauss’ radiant tone poem portraying a man’s journey through death, and Brahms’ ethereal Symphony No. 3, a cornerstone of the symphonic repertoire that the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performed in its first season. Afkham, principal conductor of the Spanish National Orchestra and Chorus, is in high demand as a guest conductor with some of the world’s finest orchestras and opera houses and is one of the most sought-after conductors to emerge from Germany in recent years.

Haydn: Symphony No. 44 in E Minor, “Mourning”
R. Strauss: Death and Transfiguration, Op. 24
Brahms: Symphony No. 3 in F Major, Op. 90
