Emmanuel Krivine, conductor
A cultural pride and joy of not only Illinois but the nation, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra returns for its 36th performance in its “southern home”—the acoustical splendor of Krannert Center’s Foellinger Great Hall. The orchestra will be conducted by Emmanuel Krivine, one of today’s most distinguished conductors, whose elegant and colorful interpretations have made him a favorite with leading orchestras and soloists around the world. Krivine leads the CSO in Berlioz’s jubilant Roman Carnival Overture, Alexander Zemlinsky’s The Mermaid (based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale)—which was written in 1903 but thought lost until the 1980s—and Chopin’s poetic, expansive Piano Concerto No. 1. The concerto features rising young British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor, whose performance of the piece has been described as “a delight from start to finish. The lyricism in the opening movement was cleanly rendered, with a touch both muscular and delicate; his playing of the Romance . . . had a singing grace. He realized Chopin’s moment of supreme magic—descending figurations hanging like crystals in the air—to perfection” (The Independent).
Berlioz: Roman Carnival Overture, Op. 9
Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 11
Zemlinsky: The Mermaid
