A Bouquet of Classics
Tonight’s concert is dedicated to Lizie Goldwasser, a longtime supporter of the university and of the arts. She will be acknowledged from the stage by Jeremy Hobson, co-host of National Public Radio’s Here and Now.
Opening the concert is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s lively Symphony No. 39. This work is part of the core symphonic repertoire and is not to be missed. Although Ludwig van Beethoven’s compositions ushered in the advent of the Romantic period, he considered himself to be an inventive Classical composer. Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2 was written as a vehicle for the composer’s own performances as a young virtuoso. This work will be conducted from the keyboard by Ian Hobson, Sinfonia da Camera’s music director and conductor. Following intermission is Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 104. This work is Haydn’s final symphony and was also the last of his 12 London symphonies.
