The Turn of the Screw

Based on Henry James’ novel of the same name, The Turn of the Screw is a classic ghost story that touches on contemporary issues, including the loss of innocence amidst situations of anarchy. When premiered in 1954, the work’s disturbing nature was a novelty in the opera world, and it continues to be one of the most popular and frequently performed operas in English.

The period piece set around the 1840s at a large country estate in England is one of Britten’s most musically interesting works. His use of a 12-note theme with variations connects the opera’s prologue and two acts of 16 scenes. Instrumentalists will be the School of Music’s Illinois Modern Ensemble, conducted by Michael Tilley.

This performance can only be viewed online. There will be no in-person, public audience.
