Sinfonia da Camera's season premiere at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts delves into the legendary love triangle among three of the Romantic era's most celebrated figures: Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann, and Clara Schumann. While Robert and Clara shared a close and creatively rich marriage, Brahms' deep bond with both often gave rise to emotional complexities-particularly in his enduring, and possibly romantic, affection for Clara. This intricate web of devotion, admiration, and longing finds poignant expression in the evening's program, which explores the personal and musical intersections of these towering artists.

The concert opens with Brahms' Variations on a Theme by Robert Schumann, Op. 23, orchestrated by Robin Holloway. A tender homage, the work transforms a Schumann theme into a rich tapestry of memory and reverence. Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor, featuring maestro Ian Hobson conducting from the piano, follows-its lyrical elegance and intimate dialogue between soloist and orchestra often interpreted as a musical love letter to Clara. The concert concludes with Brahms' monumental Symphony No. 1 in C minor, a work decades in the making and often dubbed "Beethoven's Tenth" for its architectural grandeur and dramatic scope.
