Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Celebration

The 2022 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Celebration kicks off a Calendar of Events through January 28 celebrating Dr. King’s legacy, including his advocacy work around poverty issues. Featuring Keynote Speaker Dr. Derek Barber King, Sr., this celebration will also include the presentation of awards for the James R. Burgess, Jr. Award, Susan Freiburg Humanitarian Award, the Doris Hoskins Prestigious Community Service Award, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Outstanding Achievement Award, and recognition of the Advocacy for Social Justice MLK Jr. Scholarship recipients from Champaign and Urbana school districts.

Sponsored by the MLK Advocacy for Justice Committee, Inc. in partnership with the MLK Countywide Committee and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

In order to attend this event, audience members must bring a photo ID and proof of either 1) full vaccination, 2) negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of the event start time, or 3) negative COVID-19 antigen test taken within 6 hours of the event start time. Home tests do not qualify. Masks are required throughout the event, and children under two years of age cannot be admitted. Please see our COVID-19 Safety Protocols page for full entry requirements.
