U of I Moms Weekend Events at Krannert Center
Krannert Center joins the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in welcoming Illini moms on April 14-16 for Mom’s Weekend 2023. Krannert Center’s world class arts programming, from modern dance to musical theatre, offers a range of events to make your Moms Weekend spectacular.
Fans of film noir and Broadway musicals will want to grab their tickets to Lyric Theatre @ Illinois’ production of City of Angels, running April 13 – 15 at the Virginia Theatre in Downtown Champaign, part of the “Krannert Center at the Virginia” performance series. Winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, City of Angels captures the gritty sights and sounds of classic detective movies while cleverly satirizing the Hollywood film industry, all set to a brilliant bluesy jazz score.
The Mark Morris Dance Group and Music Ensemble returns to Krannert Center April 14-15 with The Look of Love, a captivating tribute to iconic songwriter/composer Burt Bacharach. Bacharach’s expansive oeuvre includes dozens of award-winning top 40 hits, including “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head” and “Arthur’s Theme (Best that You Can Do),” both of which won Academy Awards for Best Original Song. The Look of Love features original choreography by Morris and new musical arrangements by Ethan Iverson, performed by an ensemble of piano, trumpet, bass, and drums, with singer, actress, and Broadway star Marcy Harriell on lead vocals.
The UI Women’s Glee Club and the UI Black Chorus both perform special Moms Weekend concerts at Krannert Center on Saturday, April 15. The Women’s Glee Club will be performing Suffrage Cantata, one of the latest major works written for treble choirs by renowned composer Andrea Ramsey. The Black Chorus continues the two-year celebration of 55 years of Black Chorus on the U of I campus with its annual Mom’s Day Concert, featuring sacred and popular selections and a special tribute to the mothers of graduating seniors.
