Sona Jobarteh

The African kora legacy has been handed down for seven centuries from father to son, but Sona Jobarteh has broken new ground as a female pioneer in this male-dominated tradition. Jobarteh, born into a griot hereditary music family, is the first female of West Africa’s Manding peoples to pursue the 21-stringed instrument professionally and has quickly found her own voice as an exceptional artist who connects ancient tradition with contemporary Afropop sensibilities.
