Cutting-edge artists and performances experiment with or break away from conventionally accepted artistic forms, often cutting across cultural boundaries. As part of our mission to support innovation in the arts, Krannert Center presents the work of today's performing artists.
Almost all great art was considered "cutting edge" when it was first created. The music of Bach and Beethoven, the dance of Balanchine and Cunningham, the plays of Shakespeare and Robert Shaw, and the operas of Mozart and Wagner were all considered radical in their day. As audiences began to understand the artistic language and vision of these artists, they also began to value it more. Rap and grunge music, rock opera by The Who or classical opera by Philip Glass, contemporary music by Pierre Boulez, the jazz of John Coltrane, the singing of Meredith Monk, the dance of Margaret Jenkins, and the theatre pieces of the SITI company represent more recent cutting-edge artistic work. The imagination of today's creative artists is sure to take us places we've never even dreamed of.
