Instrumental ensembles that combine brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments are known as bands. You've probably heard of brass bands, marching bands, military bands, and symphonic bands. Sometimes a group of a single kind of instrument is called a band, such as a steel drum band or a pipe band. Today, we also use the term "band" in the fields of jazz, blues, rock and roll, pop, folk, and ethnic music -- such as jazz band, Dixieland band, big band, or blues band.
Come hear the many University of Illinois bands: the Wind Symphony, two symphonic bands, three concert bands, a British Brass Band, the world-famous Marching Illini, the Basketball Band, the Orange and Blues, and Clarinet and Trombone Choirs. More than 900 students participate in the University's band programs -- one of the largest and finest in the country.
For the first 43 years of the program, Albert Austin Harding guided the program to its position of eminence. He became an honorary life president of both the College Band Directors National Association and the American Bandmasters Association. James F. Keene became director of bands at UIUC in 1985.
If you're on campus, check out the museum dedicated to one of the world's most famous bandmasters: John Philip Sousa (1854-1932). It's located at the UI Harding Band Building.
