In 1958, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and Sonny Rollins were among the headliners at the Monterey County Fairgrounds as San Francisco-based radioman Jimmy Lyons inaugurated what is now one of the longest consecutively running jazz celebrations in the world: the Monterey Jazz Festival. In its 55th year, the festival arrives on tour direct to the people of Champaign-Urbana with our own beloved Tony and Grammy Award-winning Dee Dee Bridgewater at the mic making harmony with an all-star lineup including young trumpet phenom Ambrose Akinmusire, who dazzled Krannert Center audiences in The Miles Davis Experience during the 2011-12 season. Together they represent the lineage of American jazz and reflect the “traditional-untraditionalist” attitude, jazz-with-a-purpose exuberance, and joyful fun that continue to be hallmarks of the festival to this day.
This performance will last approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes.
