Classical Mix Series | The Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin—“early music’s Bang on a Can All Stars” (Los Angeles Times)—elicits the breathtaking transparency and frenetic fluency of the Baroque period. Formed in 1982, the ensemble defiantly claimed artistic autonomy over the dictates of the socialist regime in East Germany and reclaimed its future as an authentic messenger of Baroque ideals.

On this evening, using period instruments, the Akademie presents works of flowing impetus by Georg Philipp Telemann (Overture in C major, TWV 55:C6 and Concerto for Flute and Recorder in E Minor, TWV 52:e1), Georg Friedrich Händel (Concerto Grosso, Op. 3, No. 2), and Johann Sebastian Bach (Concerto in E Major for Violin and Orchestra, BWV 1042 and Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D Major, BWV 1050). The Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin is “prepared to live the music to the full” (Gramophone), gently, insistently leading us into another time.
