The Three Gorges Dam divides past from future, human stories from monolithic forces, and country life from urban upheaval in Yung Chang’s account of contemporary China. Yu Shui is sent away from her home near the Yangtze River to support her family when their land is scheduled to be engulfed by the rising waters. As she works on a cruise ship traveling one last time through the vanishing landscape, her shy story of competition against brash co-workers mirrors the upheaval of the nation.
Nancy Jervis, the program director of the Asian Educational Media Service will lead a discussion following the screening. This presentation is part of AsiaLENS, a documentary and independent film series of the Asian Educational Media Service. AEMS promotes understanding of Asian cultures and peoples and assists K-12 and college educators in using film, video, and other visual media to teach and learn about Asia.
This event is one of the engagement activities surrounding the performance of A Chinese Home by Kronos Quartet with Wu Man at Krannert Center on January 28.
