Great Hall Series | The electrifying 27-year-old Lang Lang broke into superstardom at age 17, when he was tapped as a last-minute substitute soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Flamboyant and emotionally unconfined, he has now performed with most of the world’s major orchestras, headlined the Opening Ceremonies of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, was named by the World Economic Forum as one of 250 Young Global Leaders, and is the youngest-ever UNICEF International Goodwill Ambassador.
His long-standing artistic collaborator and friend Christoph Eschenbach brings his own consummate vitality and elegance to this program. With Beethoven’s powerfully expressive Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92, as its cornerstone, intertwining classical and Romantic elements dance and march toward an ecstatic conclusion. The symphony will be introduced by the composer’s intensely dramatic Leonora No. 3 Overture, Op. 72a. To complete the program, Lang Lang will take on Mozart’s brilliantly ever-fresh Piano Concerto No. 17 in G Major, K. 453.
Selected from among the world’s finest musicians under the age of 27, the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra embodies the vision of a united community. Imbued with the spirit of Leonard Bernstein’s founding precepts—mutual understanding, respect, tolerance, the universality of music, and a vital focus on their roles as global citizens—these passionate and dedicated musicians have inspired luminaries such as Sir Georg Solti, Kurt Sanderling, Kent Nagano, and Christopher Hogwood to take their podium. You are sure to take inspiration from their soaring technique and youthful, burning ardor in this Krannert Center debut performance on their first American tour.
