ELLNORA Traffic Jam: Richard Julian and Jim Campilongo

Saturday, September 12, 2009, at 6pm | Stage 5

ELLNORA | The Guitar Festival | Once you hear his effortless strums and sweetly bent melancholy, you’ll instantly grasp why Elvis Costello chose to showcase Richard Julian on an upcoming episode of his talk show Spectacle, which has already spotlighted Elton John, Bill Clinton, and Tony Bennett in freewheeling conversations. With “a voice as distinct as a thumbprint,” Julian insinuates ample screenplays rather than compact songs in his wry storytelling (New York Daily News). His twilit lines, painterly voice, and witty acoustics prompted Bonnie Raitt to embrace his work as “some of the coolest, smartest and original music” this decade.

He’ll match licks with Telecaster master Jim Campilongo, who reigns as the professor of “an overall killer course on How To Play Your Instrument Putting All Others To Shame” (Billboard). A member of the Little Willies with Norah Jones and Julian, he is most recognizable from his roots-rocking work on Cake’s million-selling Prolonging the Magic, and his no-holds-barred procreation of sounds reveals his multiple allegiances to Thelonius Monk, Chopin, Muddy Waters, John McLaughlin, and the Sex Pistols. Supple runs, winsome lyrics, biting reverb, and glinting swells send tunes from this guitar sorcerer skyrocketing off the planet and into the atmosphere.
