ELLNORA: Brazilian Bash
BRASIL GUITAR DUO
BRAZILIAN GUITAR QUARTET
LUCIANA SOUZA: BRAZILIAN DUOS FEATURING ROMERO LUBAMBO

Saturday, September 12, 2009, at 3:30pm | Foellinger Great Hall

ELLNORA | The Guitar Festival | The Brasil Guitar Duo and the Brazilian Guitar Quartet will turn from the splendor of their earlier shows to their flair and passion for the music of their home culture before Luciana Souza ends this ebullient afternoon. Descended from bossa nova innovators, Souza continues this enlightened approach to her own craft through gossamer and earthy interpretations of songs by Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, and Steely Dan; collaborations with James Taylor, Danilo Perez, Paul Simon, and Herbie Hancock; appearances with the New York Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Philharmonic and at Joe’s Pub; and her Grammy-nominated albums that so beautifully traverse jazz, Brazilian traditional pieces, art songs, the classical repertoire, and her own compositions. The “cognac-voiced” chanteuse (JazzTimes) heads to “cool, crystalline clarity in the heights and husky smokiness in the depths” (Los Angeles Times), and her sets with the genre-wrenching Romero Lubambo are “a true pleasure to watch” (The New York Times). First gaining fame as one-third of Trio da Paz, he’s built a reputation for sophisticated intensity, and his projects with Yo-Yo Ma, Diana Krall, Wynton Marsalis, and Kenny Barron have turned him into “an absolute wizard of post-bop acoustic jazz” (Acoustic Guitar Magazine). Infinitely facile, he’s unquestionably “the envy of most serious guitarists” (Jazziz).
