ELLNORA: Bachfest
NIGEL NORTH, LUTE
PAUL GALBRAITH, GUITAR
BRAZILIAN GUITAR QUARTET

Saturday, September 12, 2009, at 10am | Foellinger Great Hall

ELLNORA | The Guitar Festival | Nigel North’s playing has been defined as “mesmerising” (The Observer) and “unfailingly stylish” (Gramophone), and his gentle soul is a perfect match for perhaps the subtlest member of the stringed family. For almost 30 years, North has committed himself to performing, teaching, and mastering the delicate and exacting lute. His prowess on the equally exacting works of Bach is breathtaking. On his four-CD set Bach on the Lute, “the sweetness of his tone and the facility with which he approaches the most technically demanding of the partitas inspire admiration and respect in equal measure” (The Observer).

Paul Galbraith brings a “soaring dignity” to pieces from the Baroque genius through his peerless and revolutionary approach (Los Angeles Times). Held like a small cello, the eight-stringed Brahms Guitar he helped to design (with one string above and one below the typical six) allows him to revel in its “amazing clarity and a huge dynamic range” before “spellbound” audiences (Sunday Times, London). And Gramophone called his Grammy-nominated interpretations of Bach’s partitas and sonatas “a landmark in the history of guitar recordings.”

The latest incarnation of the Brazilian Guitar Quartet—with Luiz Mantovani and Clemer Andreotti joining originators Everton Gloedon and Tadeu do Amaral—retains the “tight” ensemble work and the “crisp” interplay that critics have always enjoyed (The New York Times). Their effect on the music of Bach is undeniable: “A world-class degree of precision” and performances that are “swift-paced, rollicking quietly and irresistibly driving” (Los Angeles Times). One can easily imagine Bach himself smiling down on this joyous tribute to his genius.
