Dena Vermette: Lady Sings the Ladies
WITH THE WOODY WOODWARD TRIO
Thursday-Saturday, November 12-14, 2009, at 7:30pm |
Studio Theatre
In a secluded, hazily lit corner table, silky jazz licks will float over you as you soak in the casual ambience of the Studio Theatre’s club-style setting. Next up is a bubbly bop tune that evokes happier times, brighter memories. And then you’re plunged into heartbreak with a melancholy, smoky ballad.
Dena Vermette—a radiant fixture in the local jazz community for nearly 40 years—will slide from soulful to swinging to scatting as she evokes the luminaries of an earlier era during her cabaret set. She’ll be vivacious on selections from Billie Holiday’s signature tunes, like “What a Little Moonlight Can Do” and “Body and Soul.” She’ll be fearless like the grand First Lady of Song herself on songs such as “But Not for Me,” “How High the Moon,” and “Lullaby of Birdland” indelibly delivered by Ella Fitzgerald. And she’ll swoop into sassiness when she takes on Sarah Vaughan’s classics like “Lush Life,” “Whatever Lola Wants,” and “Misty.”
Last time she pulled out her catalog of American standards and jazz classics at Krannert Center, tickets to her three shows sold quickly. Don’t hesitate! Allow yourself to be bewitched by Dena’s masterly voice and ushered off to the Apollo Theater or a tiny jazz club to while away the evening.
