Traffic Jam: Mhondoro featuring Bolokada Conde

Friday, February 19, 2010, at 5pm | Lobby

Traffic Jam | East meets West when Mhondoro—master of vivacious popular music from Thomas Mapfumo, the Bhundu Boys, and other Zimbabwean artists—connects with Guinean djembe master Bolokada Conde for a work-week-ending, body-shimmying, knee-jiggling, let-yourself-loose party. Alluring traditional rhythms, energetic vocals, propulsive guitars, and supreme drumming will be provided—you just need to bring your dancing shoes!

Mhondoro co-founder Clifford Jakopo—who also created IDWALAELIKHULU, a traditional drum theatre troupe, and appeared in Disney’s A Far Off Place—will bring his dance and drumming expertise. Bolokada—a faculty member with the Robert E. Brown Center for World Music at the U of I and soloist with Les Percussions de Guinee—will furnish his djembe virtuosity. We’ll supply the dance floor. How can you resist this party invitation?
